Most of the notable literature of the Philippines was written during the Spanish period and the first half of the 20th century in Spanish language. Philippine literature is written inSpanish, English, Tagalog, or other native Philippine languages.has its roots in the efforts of the United States, then engaged in a war with Filipino nationalist forces at the end of the 19th century. By 1901, public education was institutionalized in the Philippines, with English serving as the medium of instruction. That year, around 600 educators in the S.S. Thomas (the "Thomasites") to replace the soldiers who had been serving as the first teachers. Outside the academe, the wide availability of reading materials, such as books and newspapers in English, helped Filipinos assimilate the language quickly. III.OWN COMPOSITION

HAIKU POEM

We carry in weight
the same heavy load but mine
superior than yours.                                                    .

He peeks and sees the
 star crash into the well!
what a wonderful.

It was a fine day
and the sun was
shining gloriously.

The bridge swayed
like a spider
web in the wind.

Always look up
never stop, a star up
there will set things.

An old silent pond...
A frog jumps into the pond,
splash! Silence again.

Autumn moonlight—
a worm digs silently
into the chestnut.

Lightning flash—
what I thought were faces
are plumes of pampas grass.
A summer river being crossed
how pleasing
with sandals in my hands!

Light of the moon
Moves west, flowers' shadows
Creep eastward.

In the moonlight,
The color and scent of the wisteria
Seems far away.

O snail
Climb Mount Fuji,
But slowly, slowly!

Trusting the Buddha, good and bad,
I bid farewell
To the departing year.

Everything I touch
with tenderness, alas,
pricks like a bramble.

Over the wintry
forest, winds howl in  rage
with no leaves to blow.

The crow has flown away:
swaying in the evening sun,
a leafless tree.

In the coolness
of the empty sixth-month sky...
the cuckoo’s cry. - Masaoka Shiki

Whitecaps on the bay:
A broken signboard banging
In the April wind. - Richard Wright

Lily:
out of the water
out of itself - Nick Virgilio

ground squirrel
balancing its tomato
on the garden fence - Don Eulert

As the wind does blow
Across the trees, I see the
Buds blooming in May

I walk across sand
And find myself blistering
In the hot, hot heat

Falling to the ground,
I watch a leaf settle down
In a bed of brown.

It’s cold—and I wait
For someone to shelter me
And take me from here.

I hear crackling
Crunch, of today’s new found day
And know it won’t last

Falling to the ground,
I watch a leaf settle down
In a bed of brown.

A cricket disturbed
the sleeping child; on the porch
a man smoked and smiled.

I'm turning over
look out and give me room there
you cricket, you.

As the wind does blow
Across the trees, I see the
Buds blooming in May

I walk across sand
And find myself blistering
In the hot, hot heat

Falling to the ground,
I watch a leaf settle down
In a bed of brown.

It’s cold—and I wait
For someone to shelter me
And take me from here.

I hear crackling
Crunch, of today’s new found day
And know it won’t last

Whispering to her--
the spotted fawn
eyes the outstretched water lily.
Sick on a journey-
Over parched fields
Dreams wander on.
You rice-field maidens!
The only things not muddy
Are the songs you sing.
The butterflies dance
Brilliant colors of rainbows
Rippling like water.
Earth whirls a chorus.
Fluttering fair women talk.
Winter sways gifts.

Warm sun glinting,
thousands
of unexpected pools.
Willow leaves fallen
clear waters dried up stones
one place and another.
Pausing
halfway up the stair--
white chrysanthemums
I want to sleep
Swat the flies
Softly, please.

The teacher's drawer
has a frog in it
the class very quiet.
Red tricycles trip.
Goofy tinkles blancmanges.
The noses giggle.
You're always typing.
Well, let's see you ignore my
sitting on your hands.

My life is Jello
Sitting and waiting in the bowl
Patiently to gel.
Cherry, apple, rose,
blossoms in countless colors--
each one of them pink.

Green and speckled legs,
Hop on logs and lily pads
Splash in cool water.

In a pouch I grow,
On a southern continent --
Strange creatures I know.
